New Goa International Airport
On December 11, 2022 PM Narednra Modi inaugurated Phase-1 of the Mopa International Airport in Goa. This is the second international airport in Goa after the one at dabolim. The foundation for this airport had been laid down on November 2016.
The airport was named after people’s politician Manohar Parrikar as Manohar International airport. It will be Second Airport in Goa, 50 km away from Dabolim; MOPA Airport was constructed with sustainable Infrastructure keeping in Mind and includes, among other things, a solar Power plant, Green Buildings, LED Lights on the runway, Rainwater Collection, Cutting Edge Sewage treatment facility with recycling Capabilities.
Total cost of this project is 2870 cr and it will connect to 8 cities across India, total 2133 acres of land been used for this dream project. The Airport operations will be managed by its Nodal Agency Goa International Airport Limited. Manohar Airport is designed by Architect – Nordic – Office of Administrative and it’s been constructed by Megawide Construction Corporation.
MOPA Airport will be country’s first IGBC Green Certified Terminal. Steps taken by GMR Goa International Airport LTD –
Planted 5.5 lakh native and adaptive species in and around the airport to enhance green cover and reduce the heat island effect.
Installed a 5 MW Solar Power generation system to cater to 60 % of the total annual energy consumption.
Installed a 340 KG Organic waste composter on site to treat 100%of the organic waste generated daily.
Sent 488 ton of construction waste for reuse and recycling instead of using it at landfills.
